Clean, tight, unmarked; light crease to back cover; otherwise absolute minimal wear; appears unread; Ladysmith was a coal mining town, one of many that sprung up around the coal mines of central Vancouver Island. It was also a vision of coal baron James Dunsmuir, a vision that transformed the hillside overlooking Oyster Harbour into a thriving community. The town boomed with the expanding coal markets, but suffered as a result of the Great Strike that shook the island in 1912. Unlike other coal towns, however, the town on the hillside hung on, and, with the help of new industry, built itself a stable future. This book is about a town's successful struggle to survive.
