Belgian settlers differed from the larger immigrant groups in that they were not recruited by immigration societies and did not settle in ethnic blocs. Rather, they came to Canada to explore new opportunities, not to flee poverty and oppression, and were supported and monitored by their home government. As a result, Belgian settlers in Canada were resourceful and adaptable to both anglophone and francophone communities and adept at promotion and raising capital. An eminent historian and the son of Flemish and Walloon Belgian immigrants himself, Prof Jaenen has gleaned from Belgian and Canadian archival sources and from local, community, and family histories a story rich in detail and context that will be invaluable to Canadians to Belgian origin and to scholars and students of Western Canadian ethnicity and immigration.
As New
Soft cover
University of Calgary Press
2011
Calgary, AB

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0728/2747/0104/files/camera-7B05BCC8-7E82-4C78-8F0A-75A4480DEA7B.jpg?v=1793218949
https://werdzbooks.com/products/promoters-planters-and-pioneers-the-course-and-context-of-belgian-settlement-in-western-canada-the-west-4-jaenen-cornelius-j
