The journey covered 2,250 miles, required sixty portages, and last nearly four months. Accidents and weather caused delays, and the young adventurers found themselves in a race to beat the fall freeze-up. One of the few published accounts of a 20th century canoe journey over the waterways earlier made famous by fur traders. When the two boys made the trip in 1930, the area was still a vast wilderness inhabited by Cree Indians, Mounties, and Hudson's Bay Company employees.
