As New; Established in 1896, the Stuartburn colony was one of the earliest Ukrainian settlements in western Canada. Community and Frontier is a detailed social, economic, and geographical history of this unique ethnic community, and is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the intricate social interactions that underlie the processes of land occupation and community building within settler societies. Stuartburn was a far cry from the homogenous bloc settlement feared by the opponents of eastern European immigration. It was fractured by ethnic relationships and attitudes transplanted from Europe that affected the development of trade within the colony, and by Ukrainian religious factionalism and the predatory colonial attitudes of mainstream Canadian churches that for decades contributed to social dysfunction.
