He was an educated Newfoundlander with an enthusiasm for the culture and history of his native land. P.K. Devine enlisted the help of friends and family write down any word or turn of phrase they thought he should include in this, his planned dictionary of Newfoundland speech. Devine's book is a snapshot of the cultural and intellectual milieu of Newfoundland's capital city in the 1930s and a part of the flowering of Newfoundland culture that had been fertilized for decades.
