Clean, tight, unmarked; only flaws are a slight crease to bottom edge of ffep; hard cover is beige with brown titles and design; book is in a burgundy box with gilt titles and design; there is an ever so slight shadow to some of the lettering on the box; beautiful book - appropriate for gift giving; This book is a reprint of Galileo Galilei's last and greatest work in ORIGINAL ITALIAN (Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences) In the early 1600s, the manuscript was banned by the Inquisition in Italy, and Galileo was placed under house arrest. More than 30 years of experimentation and labor was at the risk of being lost, until a man named Louis Elzevir smuggled it into the Netherlands and published it in 1638. The manuscript was not only revolutionary science; it stood for science as a pathway to knowledge during a time when philosophy and religion dominated the intellectual sphere. Galileo himself considered it to be his most important work, and it eventually laid the foundation for what we call modern physics. As heirs to the name and tradition of the Elzevir family of publishers, Elsevier commissioned this volume in honor of great science and the efforts of publishers through the ages to help scholars publish, disseminate and preserve their work for future generations.
