More than 30 years of experimentation and labor was at the risk of being lost, until a man named Louis Elzevir smuggled it into the Netherlands and published it in 1638. The manuscript was not only revolutionary science; it stood for science as a pathway to knowledge during a time when philosophy and religion dominated the intellectual sphere.
