Evelina: or, A Young Lady's Entrance into the World in a Series of Letters - Burney, Frances

Clean, tight, unmarked; very light wear to inside corners; otherwise spine straight and uncreased; appears unread; Published anonymously in 1778, this is an epistolary account of a sheltered, orphaned young woman's entrance into society, and of her experience of family. Its comedy rages from violent practical joking reminiscent of Smollett's fiction to witty repartee that would influence Austen. The Broadview edition is based on the second edition of the novel (1779), which incorporates Burney's revision and corrections. Its appendices include contemporary reviews of Evelina as well as 18th century works on family and on comedy.
