Clean, tight, unmarked; absolute minimal wear; appears unread; This account of labour in the 1940s is an attempt to address some of the historical questions surrounding the changes introduced during the Second World War and the immediate postwar reconstruction era, and to recover some of the optimism of that time for the current age of pessimistic resignation. It offers an assessment of the choices made by unions at the historical juncture when industrial legality became entrenched for large numbers of working Canadians. By questioning what made the postwar settlement acceptable for trade unions during the 1940s we may also find solutions for our present uncertainties as they relate to the legacy of industrial legality. This is a debate in which all unionists and pro-labour academics should wish to engage.
