SIGNED BY C. HOWARD SHILLINGTON on title page; Clean, tight, unmarked; absolute minimal wear; appears unread; "Events leading to the opening of the West and the land trails of Saskatchewan had their beginnings along the Saskatchewan River, almost 2000 miles from source to end and embracing most of Saskatchewan and Alberta. When the canoe and York boat began to give way to land travel , the real opening of the West began. In the years to follow there would be many tails across this vast territory. They would include the cart trails of the Metis hunters and Metis brigades of the Hudson's Bay Company freighting supplies between the many trading posts from Fort Garry west. There would be the exploration trails of Palliser and others. There would be the boundary survey trail, the marching trail of the NWMP and the trails created by American-Canadian frontier activity. Indeed, the whole panorama of change which came to the West is reflected from the first days of trail travel until he day when the ruts of the last prairie schooner were buried under the furrow of the plow." - from the Preface
