Clean, tight, unmarked; slight wear to inside corners; otherwise very minimal wear; appears unread; The large and growing literature on the history of the western Canadian Metis in the 19th century seems disproportionate to the size of the ethnic group. The attention, however, is well merited. Metis labour was a crucial aspect of the long-lived fur trade; the Red River Resistance of 1869-70, which helped shape Confederation, arose out of Metis concerns about their place in the new economic and social order; and the Riel Rebellion of 1885 remains the last time Canadians took up arms against their own government. As one historian noted, the creation of a 'new nation' of mixed-blood people on the western prairies remains one of the most striking aspects of Canadian history.
