Manitoba's Premiers have ranged from clever legislative managers, like the early Premiers Davis and Norquay, through tough party bosses managing a rudimentary two-party system from the 1880s to the 1920s through a long period of uneasy coalitions controlled by the iron-willed Bracken and his successors. The modern period since the end of the 1950s has seen shifting partisan alliances under successive premierships. Virtually all of the governments that successive Premiers have led have been challenged by the knife-edged partisan and socio-economic divisions that characterize the province.
