Clean, tight, unmarked; small area of price sticker removal damage to upper front corner of cover; light wear to upper spine extreme; otherwise absolute minimal wear; appears unread; Gerard Manley Hopkins was a prolific poet, but on entering the Society of Jesus at the age of 24, he burnt all his poetry, and "resolve to write no more." The letters, journal entries and poems selected for this edition were written in the following years and published posthumously in 1918. His poetry was innovative in its rhythmical style, and much of his writing celebrates the unique essence of nature. In his introduction Gardner explores Hopkin's life, work and his influences and discusses his distinctive rhetoric. This edition also included editor's notes, a short bibliography, and indexes of first lines and prose sections.
