From 1889 until the time of his death in 1927, he lived in the Canadian West on a small farm near present-day Markerville, AB. There he honed his mother tongue against the adversity of immigrant experience and the longing borne of distance. Troubled throughout his life by the sleeplessness that would express itself in the title of his collected works, Andvokur, or "Wakeful Nights," he wrote many pages of verse that established him as one of the Icelandic nation's greatest poets.
