Chapters I-IV give the general development from 1904 to the present while Chapter V describes the work of the major groups in the department. A review of each group is followed by a brief selection of the work of the individual members. Few, if any, can hope to keep up with all the many facets of the subject today, so a glimpse at what is going on at the cutting edge of the whole field may reveal something of the state of physics at the beginning of the 21st century.
