Clean, tight, unmarked; age tanned; name on half-title page; two closed tears to dust jacket at upper spine extreme - front tear has associated creasing; price sticker ghost to front of dj; otherwise very minimal wear; In 1793 Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered a road cut through the wilderness of Upper Canada- a military link westward from Lake Ontario and a spur to settlement. "The Governor's Road" it was called, partly in derision, for its path was narrow and winding, beset with stones and stumps. But the settlers did come; they and their buildings are the subject of this book. The illustrations are by Hugh Robertson, one of Canada's best architectural photographers. They show public buildings as well - inns, mills, churches, courthouses, and jails. This is primarily, however, the story of the people who used these buildings.
