The Waterloo Mennonites: A Community in Paradox - Winfield, Fretz, J.

Describing their origins and focusing on their distinct way of life, the author illustrates the various organizational structures that help constitute their present day community. He clearly defines the differences between Mennonites and the Amish and explicates the various divisions within those groups. Fretz asks how today's (1989) Waterloo-area Mennonites earn their living, spend their money and use their leisure time; how families and churches respond to social change and to what degree they are accommodating to or assimilating with the larger society. He concludes his study by reflecting on the future of the Mennonites as a distinctive group.
