Clean, tight, unmarked; very light wear to edges; spine straight and uncreased; very minimal wear; Based on data gathered over a 20 year period from observations, interviews, and personal involvement, Prof. Fretz has written a remarkable sociological history of the large Mennonite and Amish community in the Waterloo area. Describing their origins and focusing on their distinct way of life, the author illustrates the various organizational structures that help constitute their present day community. He clearly defines the differences between Mennonites and the Amish and explicates the various divisions within those groups. Fretz asks how today's (1989) Waterloo-area Mennonites earn their living, spend their money and use their leisure time; how families and churches respond to social change and to what degree they are accommodating to or assimilating with the larger society. He concludes his study by reflecting on the future of the Mennonites as a distinctive group.
