His life with his wife, among their fellow exiles and emigres from "the old country." In his other life, the narrator is a professor of detective fiction at a small Canadian college. When another professor's husband is murdered, the narrator get to hone his sleuthing skills by observing the hunt for the killer. But in the aftermath of political reform in the old country, his wife is suspected of past collaboration with the fallen Communist regime, and their lives are soon entangled in an insidious web of lies.
