Clean, tight, unmarked; slight wear to inside corners; otherwise very minimal wear; Sir James Douglas described Victoria as a "perfect Eden" when the Hudson's Bay company first set up its trade depot here and christened it Fort Victoria. a few years later, more than 30,000 miners arrived, hoping to strike it rich in the gold rush of 1858. Their arrival triggered the tiny settlement's growth into a bustling centre of commerce and, eventually, the picturesque city it is today. Peter Grant traces this evolution from the Coast Salish First Nations who first populated the area to the establishment of BC Ferries in 1960.
