Clean, tight, unmarked; small stain inside front cover with slight transfer to ffep; light wear to upper back inside corner; otherwise very minimal wear; In 1946, a Black Halifax businesswoman, Viola Desmond, was arrested for sitting in a white's only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, NS. Desmond's arrest was the product of decades of racial segregation and discrimination in Canada, and it occurred nine years before Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Alabama. This book provides a concise overview of the narrative of the Black experience in Canada. Reynold traces this narrative from slavery under French and British rule in the 18th century to the practice of racial segregation and the fight for racial equality in the 20th century. Included are personal recollections by Wanda Robson, Viola Desmond's youngest sister, together with important but previously unpublished documents and other primary sources in the history of Blacks in Canada.
